My Fairytale Divorce: A Mother's Story
Published in Paperback by Whitecap Books (December, 1998)
Author: Gillian Tucker
Average review score:

Great reading where you might not expect it
Interesting experiences rarely happen to great writers. This amazingly talented writer describes her marriage and divorce; a perceptive, objective, almost detached view, showing both sides. Hard to put down, compelling account; no axes ground. Leaves the reader to form own opinion. A very good read.

Over the Hills and Far Away: More Stories From Southern Illinois

Over the Hills and Far Away
Over the Hills and Far Away is an imaginative, whimsical, artist's remembrance of growing from a farm girl in the Hill Country of So. Ill to getting an education in a major university, to obtaining national recognition by lonely soldiers, and courtship by a WWII "city feller."

Those of us who lived in rural America reminisce with fond memories of a simpler, gentler time. Our grandchildren who live in such a different world can glimpse the roots from whence they came.

This is a must-read delightful book of a pleasant era and the pathos of the World War II period.

Philosophy & Myth in Karl Marx

Re: Philosophy & Myth in Karl Marx by Robert C. Tucker
It is an excellent book; it seeks to explain the roots of Marxism, defined as the actual "thought" of Karl Marx rather than "Marxism" in the hands of Lenin and others. Tucker's conclusions are, to say the least, doubtful (do however decide this for yourself), but that doesn't blemish the impressive scope and quality of his scholarship.

Pieces of the Piedmont

Authors: Walter Nicklin and Tucker Hill

Pieces of the Piedmont
This is a classic, though I'm afraid too few people know about it. The graceful and alert writing together with the one-of-a-kind monotypes capture this part of the world -- the Piedmont or Hunt Country of Virginia -- better than any other book I've ever seen. Even for people unfamiliar with Virginia,it should be read for its insights into the universal power of particular landscapes, their history and natural beauty.

Robert Frank: New York to Nova Scotia
Published in Hardcover by New York Graphic Society (April, 1986)
Authors: Anne Tucker and Philip Brookman
Average review score:

Very interesting material. Unique among the books on Frank.
A few rare Frank images are reproduced, but this book is mainly a collection of documents and writings by or about Frank. This is the only source for much of this material: letters from a young Robert Frank to his parents about New York, for example; a facsimile of Frank's Guggenheim application; a police report made during Frank's trip across America; writing by Kerouac about a trip made with Frank to Florida. I recommend this book to any person interested in Robert Frank and already familiar with his work. Nevertheless, the few images here reproduced stand out like flowers.

The Sayings of the Late Bishop William W. Tucker
Published in Paperback by Buy Books on the web.com (2000)
Author: Frederick L. Cuthbertson
Average review score:

Words of Wisdom
William W. Tucker was a man who after dedicating his life to Christ at 17 spent his time doing the work of God. Simply by reading author Frederick Cuthbertson's heartfelt words and descriptions of Bishop Tucker it becomes abundantly clear that he had a tremendous impact on the lives of those he came in contact with. This book includes a brief biography of Bishop Tucker, but the true depth of the book comes from the collection of over 150 of his sayings. While Bishop Tucker may not have originated all of the sayings, he applied his wisdom and Biblical knowledge to the context in which they were used. The book lists the various sayings, includes a brief description of the context in which they were used and citations of Biblical references which relate to the sayings. For example the saying "Rake the word to yourself and don't use a shovel" suggests that the word of God is meant for our hearts and not meant to be cast away when it condemns us for our misdeeds.

With the well over 150 sayings included in this book, there is advice that is relevant to any person at any given point in their lives. More importantly, the book's easy to remember sayings, when taken to heart, will help any Christian walk closer to God. The only disappointment about this book was it's organization, it would have been a much more powerful day to day resource for Christians had the various sayings been organized by theme so that they are easier to locate. Still The "Sayings" of the Late Bishop William W. Tucker is both inspirational and motivational.

Soviet Political Mind
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1972)
Authors: Ric Tucker and Robert C. Tucker
Average review score:

Sovietology and the importance of subjectivity
Professor Robert C. Tucker's thin book, "The Soviet Political Mind" is an important commentative piece about the role of Soviet leaders, especially Stalin, in the nature of the development of the USSR's political landscape. This book is not meant to be a history text, which is not to say that the test is not factual. Tucker's claims about the leadership's role (as opposed to ideological or Russian historic forces) as the primary catalyst of state driven developments rests on the evidence of outward historical appearance and psychological presumptions. For example, Prof. Tucker makes claims about Stalin's disposition as an individual and the nature of his internal motivation to act in the way that he did without giving credence to, or even consideration of, his subsequent argument about the legitimizing power that his ideology possessed. Simply, Tucker argues, at times, that Stalin was a condemnable, aberrant personality in the Soviet experience, thereby undermining his later argument that Stalin was a natural outgrowth of the Soviet political landscape. This book is important because of its interesting unabashful approach to rational argument, however it should not be read without a serious critical eye.
